UK-wide vinyl flooring collection scheme

Setting up a UK-wide scheme for post-use vinyl flooring, allowing flooring to be recycled rather than going into general waste and landfill.

Vinyl flooring collection scheme

Leading floor manufacturers Altro Ltd and Polyfloor Ltd.

  • Manufacturers had developed technology to recycle vinyl flooring material but needed a sustainable and cost-effective recycling scheme to collect small volumes of material from a large geographical area
  • High purity waste stream required to enable successful recycling
  • Aim to remove the material from the general waste stream and avoid landfill

Axion solution:

  • Worked with Altro and Polyflor to establish a workable collection strategy
  • Recruited a variety of collection sites across the UK, including drop-off points at distributors
  • Implemented back-haul collections
  • Engaged the entire supply chain, from individual fitters to major contractors
  • Marketed and publicised the scheme

  • Recofloor vinyl flooring take-back scheme is now well- established, with over 700 collection sites and 60 drop-off sites nationwide
  • Over 3.400 tonnes of vinyl flooring has been collected to date and diverted from landfill
  • Press releases and newsletters are issued regularly to maintain and increase awareness
